The honest answer is that thickness gets most of the attention and reinforcement does most of the work. A reinforced 12-mil liner will outlast an unreinforced 20-mil one in a space anyone actually crawls through.

6 mil, 12 mil, 20 mil

6 mil is the builder's sheet — the unreinforced polyethylene laid loose over the dirt on a huge share of Charlotte homes. It tears when knelt on, the seams are rarely sealed, and it is usually in pieces within a few years. It is not a vapor barrier in any functional sense once it has been walked on.

12 mil reinforced is the practical floor for a real installation. The reinforcing scrim is what stops a puncture becoming a tear.

20 mil reinforced is what goes into spaces with heavy traffic, sharp debris, or where the crawl space is used for storage. It is the standard we quote by default because the cost difference against 12 mil is small relative to the labour of installing either.

What actually determines whether it lasts

Seams sealed rather than overlapped. Termination up the foundation wall and mechanically fastened rather than tucked. Piers wrapped and sealed individually. Ground cleared of anything sharp before the liner goes down.

Every one of those is installation rather than product, which is why two crawl spaces with identical liners can look completely different after five years.

If a quote specifies a thickness and nothing about seam sealing, wall termination or pier detail, it is describing a material rather than an installation.
